The retardant

Long term retardant keeps working after it dries

Water, gels, and foams mostly help while they are wet. That can be only a few minutes. Long term fire retardant stays on plants and wood and changes how they burn.

Not water, gel, or foam

Short term products need water to work. When that water dries, they stop. Long term retardant keeps working after it dries.

It changes how plants and wood burn

The retardant treats plants and wood. Treated surfaces are harder to catch fire from embers and heat.

Spray before you leave

You spray plants, wood, decks, and fences before you leave, or before fire season. It is meant to stay on those surfaces.

Stays through light weather

It stays active until about 3 inches of rain wash it off. That number comes from Matador Fire. Light dew or a short sprinkle is not enough.

Practically non-toxic

Matador Fire publishes EPA Category IV, the lowest hazard class. That means practically non toxic. StillMeadow tested it. Intertek tested it to Title 19 standards. That is a lab test, not a CAL FIRE endorsement. Used as directed, Matador Fire describes it as safe for family, pets, and plants. It dries clear.

One layer of a bigger plan

Retardant is one layer. Keep space around your home clear and harden the structure too. No system can promise a house will make it through every fire.

Wildland fire crews use long term retardant to pretreat fuel and build fire lines. That is about the product class. It is not an endorsement of Matador Fire.
